What our 3D measurements can do — from 3D quality control to reverse engineering
We combine 3D scanning with CAD data analysis, so a single measurement yields a full set of results: conformance check against the model, deviation map, reconstruction of parts without documentation, or a model for 3D printing and CNC machining.
In our daily work, we combine 3D scanning with data analysis in a CAD environment. This lets us do several tasks from a single measurement: check a part's conformity to the model, generate a deviation map, recreate a part with no drawing, or prepare a model for 3D printing or for CNC machining in our shop.
3D measurement at ADJATECH is more than a raw scan. Standard practice includes processing the STL mesh (cleaning and closing the solid) and, by agreement, comparing the result with your 3D documentation, plus a PDF measurement report ready to add to your internal documentation or to use in a conversation with your part supplier.
3D scanning and measurement services — what we do
- 3D scanning of matte and shiny parts, from 5 × 5 × 5 mm components to large objects measured on the customer's shop floor.
- Reverse engineering: solid, surface, and fully parametric models.
- CAD modeling from a scan: STEP and SLDPRT files ready for production or editing.
- Recreating parts without documentation, including worn or damaged parts.
- 3D quality inspection and comparison of a scan to the CAD model.
- Deviation map and PDF measurement report.

Measurement at our shop or on-site — single parts and series
For smaller parts, the easiest option is to ship or bring them to Janikowo near Poznań, where we have a permanent measurement station. Large, heavy or permanently installed components we measure at your site — with no disassembly or transport. Prototypes and series go through the same process, so the inspection result for a batch is directly comparable to the scan of the first article.

02 · Measuring equipment
Scanology Simscan 42 3D scanner — what we measure with and where the 0.02 mm accuracy comes from
Our main tool is a handheld, mobile optical scanner — suited to small, precise parts from 5 × 5 × 5 mm as well as large components measured on customers' shop floors.
Our primary tool is the handheld, portable Scanology Simscan 42 3D scanner. This latest-generation device handles small, precise parts (from 5 × 5 × 5 mm) just as well as large objects measured directly on customers' production floors. 3D laser scanning is contact-free: the device's cameras capture the laser lines projected onto the part and record millions of points on its surface, with no contact and no risk of scratching the part.
Stated accuracy of 0.02 mm + 0.015 mm/m — what does it mean in practice?
The scanner's stated accuracy is 0.02 mm + 0.015 mm/m: the first value is the base error, and the second grows with the size of the measured object. The actual final accuracy depends on the complexity of the part's shape, its size, and its surface condition, so before measuring we determine which dimensions are critical for you. Where the tolerance of individual features matters, we supplement the scan with contact measurement on a CMM coordinate measuring machine located in the same shop.
Matte and glossy surfaces, parts from 5 × 5 × 5 mm
We scan matte and glossy surfaces — black or polished parts are coated before measurement with a thin layer of removable white scanning powder. We set the upper part size limit individually; the only exclusion is gases. The table below lists the scanner's specifications and what we can measure and to what extent.
Do you have a part without documentation, or doubts about its geometry?
Send a few photos and a short description through the quote form. Within 48 hours, you will receive a preliminary quote and a proposed lead time.

Reverse engineering and 3D quality inspection — CAD model from a scan, deviation map and measurement report
Reverse engineering and 3D dimensional inspection solve several typical production problems: a missing drawing, a worn mold, a spare part with no replacement available, or a batch that has to be compared against documentation.
Reverse engineering — from scan to editable CAD model
Reverse engineering is the recreation of technical documentation from a physical part. A scan produces an STL triangle mesh: accurate, but not editable. Based on it, we manually model a solid, surface, or fully parametric body in CAD (a STEP or SLDPRT file for SolidWorks 2025) that you can edit, archive, and send for milling or turning. If a damaged part is missing a section, we reconstruct it from the geometry of the surviving surfaces.
3D quality inspection — scan-to-CAD comparison, deviation map and PDF report
For quality inspection, we overlay the scan on the customer's CAD model and generate a deviation map: a color visualization that immediately shows where the part deviates from nominal and by how much. We add a PDF measurement report to the map, with deviations at selected cross-sections and points. This is how we verify prototypes, first articles from new tooling, and entire production batches.

What affects the final price of 3D measurement and reverse engineering?
- Geometric complexity and part size — more freeform surfaces and undercuts mean longer scanning and more mesh processing.
- Output file types — STL, STEP or SLDPRT.
- Scope of reverse engineering — parametric model, 2D drawings.
- Deviation map and inspection report — whether they are needed and how many features we inspect.
- Measurement at our facility or on-site at your location.
- Lead time and batch size.
How do you get an accurate quote for 3D scanning?
Send a few photos of the part, approximate dimensions and the purpose of the project (inspection, copy, CAD model) using the form on this page, or contact us by phone. The more information you provide, the more accurate the quote. If you have a CAD model or an old drawing, attach it, even if it is incomplete: it will shorten the work on the deviation map or modeling. The quote can also cover further stages if the part is to be made by us: after scanning, it moves on to milling, turning, 3D printing or casting without changing suppliers.

Questions and answers
FAQ — frequently asked questions about 3D measurement, 3D scanning and reverse engineering
Sixteen short answers to the questions customers ask us most often: what a 3D scan is, which files you will receive, how much it costs and how to prepare a part. Didn't find your answer? Write or call us.
01What is 3D measurement and 3D scanning?
3D scanning is a non-contact, optical measurement of the geometry of a physical object. The scanner captures millions of points on the surface of the part, and software joins them into a triangle mesh saved as an STL file. This digital counterpart of the part is the starting point for quality inspection, CAD modeling, reverse engineering and 3D printing — with no contact and no risk of damaging the part being measured.
02What is reverse engineering?
Reverse engineering is the recreation of technical documentation — a CAD model and a 2D drawing — from a physical part for which no files exist. The process combines a 3D scan with manual modeling in a CAD environment: the scanner mesh serves as a reference, and the engineer builds a solid on it with nominal dimensions. The result is a file ready for production, editing or archiving.
03What is the difference between a 3D scan and a CAD model?
A 3D scan is an STL file — a triangle mesh representing the surface of the part together with its actual imperfections. It cannot be conveniently edited or dimensioned. A CAD model (STEP, SLDPRT) is a parametric or surface solid with nominal dimensions that can be modified, dimensioned on a drawing and passed on to production, for example to CNC machines. The scan is therefore a reference, and the CAD model is the documentation.
04Is 3D scanning alone enough to make a part?
It depends on the technology. An STL file from a scan is fully sufficient for 3D printing or for making a casting mold — both methods work directly on the mesh. CNC machining (milling, turning) usually requires a STEP model created through reverse engineering, because CAM software needs clean geometry with nominal dimensions and tolerances.
05Can a part be recreated without technical documentation?
Yes — it is one of the most common orders. We scan the part, create a CAD model from the scan and, if you need them, 2D technical drawings. We also recreate spare parts that are no longer available, as well as sections of damaged components — we reconstruct the missing geometry from the surviving surfaces and the function of the part. We can then manufacture the finished part right away in our own CNC machine park.
06Will a CAD model made from a scan be editable?
We agree on the model type with you before work begins. We can prepare a solid model, a surface model (for freeform shapes), or a fully parametric SolidWorks 2025 model in an SLDPRT file that you can freely edit in the feature tree. In a STEP file, we deliver a solid ready to use in any CAD system and for CNC machining programming.
07What files will I receive after the 3D scanning service?
The standard deliverable is an STL file with a closed, cleaned-up solid. Once the scope is agreed, we also provide a STEP model, an SLDPRT file for SolidWorks 2025, a deviation map, and a PDF measurement report. On selected projects, we also provide the raw point cloud and 2D technical drawings. We send all files electronically, within the scope agreed before measurement.
08How much does a 3D measurement cost?
For simpler parts, the price of a 3D measurement starts at PLN 250. The upper limit depends on the scope of work: the size and complexity of the part, the type of output files, and whether you need a deviation map, a report, or a CAD model. We quote every order individually — just send a few photos of the part and a short description of the purpose, and we will reply within 48 hours.
09What determines the price of reverse engineering?
Primarily the complexity of the geometry: a simple turned part is modeled faster than a housing with freeform surfaces. Other factors include the model type (solid, surface, or fully parametric), whether missing or worn areas need to be reconstructed, and whether a 2D technical drawing with dimensions and tolerances is needed in addition to the 3D model. We define the scope before quoting.
10Do you offer on-site 3D scanning at the customer's location?
Yes. We scan smaller parts at our workstation in Janikowo near Poznań, but we perform on-site 3D scanning throughout Poland. Large, heavy, or permanently installed items — machines, molds, structures — are measured directly at your site, without disassembly or transport. The scanner is handheld and mobile, so we can take the measurement on the shop floor.
11How long does a 3D measurement take?
We set the lead time individually — it depends on the size and complexity of the part, the number of pieces, and the scope of post-scan work (CAD model, deviation map, drawings). We respond to inquiries within 48 hours and include a proposed date for the measurement and file delivery with the quote. If your order is urgent, say so in your inquiry — we will tell you what is realistic.
12Can you sign an NDA?
Yes. We work under non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) — we sign one before receiving any data if the project requires it. We treat all photos, scans, models, and geometries we receive as confidential, whether or not an agreement has been signed. This also applies to automotive and tooling projects, where design protection is especially important.
13Do you produce a deviation map?
Yes. A deviation map is a graphic, color-coded visualization of the deviations of the scan from the CAD model: each area of the surface is assigned a color corresponding to the deviation value, so you can see at once where the part falls outside tolerance. We attach a PDF measurement report with values at selected points and cross-sections — ready for quality documentation.
14Do you compare the 3D scan to the CAD model?
Yes — this is the basis of our 3D quality inspection. We overlay the scan on the CAD model you provide and generate a deviation map and a measurement report. This is how we inspect production batches, verify prototypes and first articles from new tooling, and check whether a supplier made the part according to the documentation. Just send the model in STEP format with your inquiry.
15What parts can be 3D scanned?
We scan parts with matte and shiny surfaces, starting from 5 × 5 × 5 mm — we set the upper limit case by case, because we measure large objects on site. The material does not matter: metal, plastic, composite, wood, or stone. The only exception is gases — objects without a solid surface that cannot be measured optically.
16How do I prepare a part for 3D scanning?
The part should be cleaned of dirt, oil, coolant, and dust — anything on the surface will be scanned along with it. Before measurement, we coat black, shiny, or polished parts with a thin layer of white, removable scanning powder that mattes the surface; it is easy to remove afterward. If you have a CAD model or an old drawing, attach it to your order — it will shorten the work on the deviation map.
